studios pretty much an office rn was Ian Swanson’s first solo exhibition in London. Presented at Welcome Screen in 2013, it belongs to the early Brooklyn period in which the limits of studio space, work, and circulation became active conditions of the practice.

The installation organized paintings and objects through systems associated with storage and commercial display. Two parallel towers occupied the center of the narrow gallery while smaller works and altered consumer objects were distributed along its walls. Presentation determined how the works were encountered, making the gallery operate simultaneously as exhibition space, studio, and provisional office.
